Philippe Clement, the Rangers boss, is facing a significant challenge in determining his best option to lead the line as the club’s primary striker. This uncertainty was highlighted once again after Rangers’ 1-0 victory over St. Johnstone, where none of the three available strikers—Cyriel Dessers, Hamza Igamane, or Danilo—could fully stake a claim for the position.
Cyriel Dessers, who has started more games this season than his competitors, was benched for the second consecutive time. In his place, Moroccan forward Hamza Igamane was given a chance to shine, having delivered a stellar performance with two goals and an assist in Rangers’ 4-1 triumph over OGC Nice in the Europa League days earlier. However, Igamane struggled to replicate that form and was substituted in the 76th minute for midfielder Mohamed Diomande.
The Brazilian striker Danilo, introduced in the 54th minute, also failed to impress, leaving Rangers dependent on an own goal from Jason Holt to secure the win. Dessers, despite his overall record as the club’s most-used forward this season, remained on the bench throughout the match.
Former Everton midfielder Steven Naismith, speaking on BBC’s Sportscene, expressed his belief that Clement is still unsure of his first-choice striker due to the inconsistent performances of the trio.
> “That’s probably the biggest frustration for the manager. He’s got three forwards who are all slightly different in profile. For any Rangers forward, it’s about consistency—scoring or contributing regularly. Dessers has done that the most but has come under criticism recently. Clement is searching for that one guy who will consistently hit the net and make Rangers’ attack more reliable.”
With Dessers starting 18 of Rangers’ 22 games this season, Igamane only four, and Danilo just one, Clement’s striker conundrum persists. As the season progresses, finding a dependable forward could prove pivotal to Rangers’ campaign success.
