Boavista’s Bruno Onyemaechi delivered a standout performance in their narrow 3-2 defeat to league leaders Sporting CP on Saturday night at the Estádio José Alvalade.
The Super Eagles left-back, deployed as a left winger by coach Cristiano Bacci, showcased his versatility and attacking flair. In the 58th minute, Onyemaechi unleashed a sensational left-footed half-volley from inside the box, a strike so powerful that even the Sporting goalkeeper’s best efforts couldn’t keep it out. The goal marked Boavista as the first team to score more than one goal against Sporting in domestic competitions this season.
Despite Onyemaechi’s brilliance, Boavista couldn’t secure a point. Viktor Gyökeres and Trincão scored for Sporting, with Robert Bozenik briefly equalizing before Onyemaechi’s moment of magic.
However, the night ended on a sour note for the Nigerian international, who limped off in the closing minutes with cramps and pain in his right thigh. He was replaced by Manuel Namora. According to A Bola, the Boavista medical team will evaluate his fitness when the squad resumes training on Monday.
Onyemaechi has been a cornerstone for both Boavista and Nigeria this season, featuring in all but one of Boavista’s Liga Portugal matches and being the most utilized player for the Super Eagles during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. His injury will undoubtedly be a concern for both his club and country as they await further updates.
