“Taiwo Awoniyi: A Reliable Backup for Chris Wood, Says Stuart Pearce”

Taiwo Awoniyi is yet to rediscover his scoring touch this season, as the Nottingham Forest striker has gone 11 appearances without a goal. Despite his struggles, former Manchester City defender Stuart Pearce remains optimistic about Awoniyi’s role in the team, highlighting Forest’s attacking depth under manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Pearce, a Nottingham Forest legend, lauded Chris Wood, Forest’s leading marksman, who has been in scintillating form this campaign. The New Zealand international has netted nine goals in 14 appearances, solidifying his position as the team’s main striker after his move from Newcastle United became permanent during the summer.

Speaking to Nottinghampost, Pearce praised Forest’s counterattacking prowess, which he believes has been a key factor in their success, including a stunning win at Anfield earlier this season.

“The legs they’ve got on the counterattack have been very good. They are the only team to win at Liverpool because of the counterattack threat they offer,” Pearce said.

He also commended Wood’s recent performances, describing this period as a “halcyon” moment in his career. However, Pearce expressed confidence in Awoniyi’s ability to step up when needed.

“If Chris Wood isn’t fit, Taiwo Awoniyi can step in. He did well last season, and having that depth is a big positive for the team. With pace and two reliable goalscorers up front, Forest’s counterattack remains a significant threat,” Pearce added.

Though both Awoniyi and Wood were unable to make an impact in Forest’s recent defeat at Manchester City, the team will look to bounce back when they visit Manchester United this weekend.
