Ademola Lookman Poised for History as Atalanta Take on Udinese

The Super Eagles star could achieve a historic milestone in Serie A this weekend.

Ademola Lookman, the reigning 2024 African Player of the Year, is on the brink of etching his name into Serie A history as Atalanta prepares to face Udinese at the Bluenergy Stadium on Saturday, January 11.

The 27-year-old Nigerian forward has been a revelation for Atalanta since his arrival, with his incredible form powering the Bergamo-based club’s bid to reclaim the Serie A summit. With 49 career goals across Europe’s top five leagues—11 in the Premier League, five in the Bundesliga, and 33 in Serie A—Lookman needs just one more strike to hit the 50-goal milestone.

More significantly, a goal this weekend would make Lookman the first player to score double-digit goals in three consecutive Serie A seasons. According to Opta, Lookman scored 13 goals in the 2022/23 campaign, followed by 11 in 2023/24, and currently has nine this season.

Lookman’s impact extends far beyond goal-scoring. Across 77 Serie A matches, 11 Europa League fixtures, five Champions League outings, and other domestic competitions, he has amassed an impressive 44 goals and 24 assists for Atalanta. This dual threat as both a finisher and playmaker has solidified his importance to Gian Piero Gasperini’s attack.

The versatile forward’s quest for history adds a layer of intrigue to Saturday’s clash, as Atalanta aims to maintain momentum in the title race.
