Belgian Cup Heartbreak for Genk
Tolu Arokodare’s brilliant opener wasn’t enough to save Genk from a 2-1 defeat against Club Brugge in the Belgian Cup semifinal on Wednesday at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
The clash featured Nigerian talents on both sides, with Arokodare leading Genk’s attack and Raphael Onyedika anchoring Club Brugge’s defense. Genk dominated the early proceedings, and in the 28th minute, Arokodare showcased his predatory instincts by converting a pinpoint cross from Jarne Steuckers into the bottom-right corner to put the visitors ahead.
However, the lead was short-lived. Brugge’s Joel Ordonez restored parity just six minutes later, sending the game into halftime at 1-1. The second half saw Brugge’s dominance grow, culminating in Christos Szolis’ decisive goal in the 74th minute. Arokodare, despite his promising first-half display, faded in the latter stages and was substituted shortly after Brugge’s second goal.
With this result, Club Brugge advanced to the final, awaiting the winner of the Anderlecht vs. Antwerp tie, while Genk’s Cup dreams were dashed.
