Asamoah Gyan Claims Kwesi Nyantakyi’s Downfall Was Sabotage Driven by Selfish Interests

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has passionately defended ex-Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi, alleging that his removal from office was the result of sabotage and self-serving agendas.

In a heartfelt Instagram Live session, Gyan expressed disappointment over the state of Ghanaian football since Nyantakyi’s exit in 2018, following the controversial ‘Number 12’ exposé. He described Nyantakyi as a unifying leader who prioritized the development of Ghana football and refused to accommodate selfish demands.

“When Nyantakyi was the GFA president, look at where Ghana football was. He wouldn’t allow internal conflicts or selfish agendas to derail progress,” Gyan stated.

The former striker claimed that Nyantakyi’s principled stance and refusal to bow to a “yesa massa” culture made him a target. He argued that detractors deliberately sought his removal to serve their interests.

“Nyantakyi was leading us somewhere. He became CAF Vice President, one of the most powerful figures in African football. But because he wouldn’t entertain their selfish interests, they sabotaged him,” Gyan lamented.

Highlighting Nyantakyi’s achievements, including his rise to CAF 1st Vice President and FIFA Executive Council member, Gyan stressed that his leadership brought stability and direction to Ghana football. He contrasted Nyantakyi’s era with the current state of the sport in Ghana, which he described as stagnated and lacking vision.

“Since his removal as GFA president, look at what has become of Ghana football. It’s clear who the problem was. People may not have agreed with everything he did, but the truth is he was doing well,” Gyan added.

Nyantakyi was forced out in 2018 following allegations of misconduct. However, Gyan believes his exit marked a turning point for the worse in Ghana football, accusing detractors of prioritizing personal gain over the development of the sport.
