The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is poised to make significant changes to the Black Stars’ technical team following their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Henry Asante Twum, the GFA Communications Director, has confirmed that restructuring is underway as part of preparations for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers set to resume in March 2025.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, Asante Twum revealed that the decision to re-evaluate the technical team was extensively discussed during the GFA’s most recent Executive Council meeting.
“Suggestions were made regarding the head coach [Otto Addo] and the assistant coaches. The backroom staff’s contributions since their appointment in March 2024 were analyzed, and it was decided to make changes. However, I cannot confirm specific individuals who will leave,” he said.
Asante Twum further noted that three individuals have been tasked with presenting recommendations to the Executive Council to guide the reshuffle. With time running out, any new appointments will need to happen quickly to ensure the team is adequately prepared for the next phase of qualifiers.
Reports suggest assistant coaches John Paintsil and Joseph Laumann are likely candidates to exit the team. The pair joined the technical setup in March 2024, replacing George Boateng and Didi Dramani. However, under the leadership of head coach Otto Addo, the team endured a disappointing AFCON qualification campaign, recording three losses and three draws.
This marks the first time in 20 years that the Black Stars have failed to secure AFCON qualification, increasing pressure on the GFA to revamp the technical staff and reinvigorate the squad ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers.
