Chiamaka Okwuchukwu Joins San Diego Wave in NWSL, Set to Team Up with Super Falcons Stars

San Diego Wave FC has confirmed the signing of Nigerian striker Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, marking a significant step in the young forward’s career. Okwuchukwu, who impressed during the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, has joined the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) club on a one-year contract, following a transfer from Rivers Angels FC in Nigeria’s Women’s Premier League.

The 19-year-old made her mark at the U-20 World Cup, scoring two goals and providing an assist in four matches, further building on her success from the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, where Nigeria advanced to the quarterfinals. This performance has earned her recognition, including a nomination for Young Player of the Year at the 2024 CAF Awards.

San Diego Wave’s Sporting Director and General Manager, Camille Ashton, shared her excitement about Okwuchukwu’s arrival, emphasizing her potential to enhance the team’s attacking power alongside current stars like Asisat Oshoala, Michelle Alozie, and Uchenna Kanu—fellow Super Falcons players in the NWSL. The presence of these compatriots is expected to ease Okwuchukwu’s transition to the league and her new team.

The 19-year-old’s signing is seen as part of San Diego Wave’s strategy to inject young talent into their squad. After completing her medical exam and obtaining necessary paperwork, Okwuchukwu will be ready to join the team ahead of the 2025 NWSL season, which kicks off in March, starting with two preseason matches in February.
