In a thrilling Championship encounter at the Stadium of Light, Ghanaian youngster Darko Gyabi delivered a game-changing performance to help Plymouth Argyle secure a 2-2 draw against Sunderland on Saturday.
The 20-year-old, currently on loan from Leeds United, came off the bench to provide a crucial assist in stoppage time, ensuring his side snatched a point from the jaws of defeat.
The match began as a tightly contested affair, with both teams struggling to find the net in the first half. After the break, Plymouth took the lead in the 59th minute, courtesy of an own goal by Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson. However, the hosts responded swiftly, leveling the score just two minutes later through Wilson Isidor.
Sunderland appeared to have the upper hand when Trai Hume restored their lead in the 73rd minute. But Plymouth, refusing to back down, pushed for an equalizer. The turning point came when Darko Gyabi replaced Julio Pleguezuelo late in the second half. The Ghanaian midfielder’s energy and creativity shifted the momentum in Plymouth’s favor.
In the dying moments of the game, Gyabi set up Nathanael Ogbeta, who fired home a dramatic equalizer to silence the home crowd and secure a valuable point for the visitors.
Gyabi’s impactful display highlights his potential as one of Ghana’s emerging talents. With 27 Championship appearances this season, the youngster has now recorded one goal and two assists, further proving his worth to both Plymouth and parent club Leeds United.
