In a determined move to reignite the glory days of the Black Stars, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has unveiled sweeping changes to the national team’s technical setup. Following a disappointing campaign that saw Ghana finish last in their AFCON 2025 qualifying group, the GFA initiated a comprehensive review aimed at addressing the team’s inconsistencies on the international stage.
The most notable addition is veteran German coach Wilfried Schäfer, famed for leading Cameroon to AFCON glory in 2002. Schäfer takes on the dual role of Black Stars technical advisor and GFA football director, bringing his vast experience to the table.
Adding local expertise, Desmond Ofei, head coach of Ghana’s U20 team, has been promoted to assistant coach for the senior side, replacing Joseph Lauman. He will collaborate with retained assistants John Pantsil and Fatawu Dauda under head coach Otto Addo’s leadership.
The GFA has also bolstered the psychological and analytical aspects of the team. Belgian sports psychologist Kris Perquy, with 17 years of experience, will focus on strengthening the players’ mental resilience. Meanwhile, video analyst Gregory De Grauwe, a UEFA-certified coach with a background in physical education, joins to enhance the team’s tactical preparation.
Logistical support has also been reinforced, with veteran equipment officers Issah Amadu and Abdul Rahman Alhassan—who bring a combined 53 years of experience—joining the setup.
With these changes, the GFA is signaling its intent to reclaim dominance in African football and make an impression on the global stage. All eyes now turn to March 2025, when the Black Stars return to action in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
