Kwesi Appiah’s Sudan is a team forged in adversity and brimming with resilience. After navigating the challenges of civil war to secure a historic spot at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the team is ready to take on any opponent in Morocco.
Appiah, who previously captained Ghana and coached them at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, has transformed Sudan’s national team into a symbol of hope for a nation in turmoil. Their remarkable qualification journey saw them overcome immense odds, including playing all their qualifiers on foreign soil.
In an interview ahead of the AFCON group stage draw on January 27, Appiah exuded confidence, emphasizing the importance of mindset in such a prestigious tournament. “Once you’ve qualified for AFCON, as a coach, I don’t think you should have any preferences regarding who you’re drawn against,” he said.
“We must be ready to face anyone. If you fear any team, then you shouldn’t participate in the competition at all. The key is preparation and confidence,” he added.
Sudan’s road to Morocco is already historic, with their qualification coming at the expense of Appiah’s homeland, Ghana—a testament to his tactical acumen. Now, with the tournament approaching, Appiah’s team is determined to show the world what they’re made of.
