The Rise of a Nigerian Talent in England
Kelechi Nwakali’s journey back to English football has taken a promising turn as his first-ever goal for Barnsley has been nominated for the club’s Goal of the Month award for December 2024.
The Nigeria international, who joined Barnsley last summer, made an instant impact during his full debut in League One, scoring a sensational goal in the team’s 2-1 victory over Exeter City at St James Park on December 14.
After a bouncing ball landed at the edge of the area, Nwakali displayed precision and composure, firing a half-volley into the bottom corner. His equalizer, which came three minutes into the second half, showcased the class and vision that earned him the Golden Ball at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup.
Now, Nwakali’s strike stands among the top four goals shortlisted for Barnsley’s Goal of the Month. Competing alongside stunning efforts from teammates Davis Keillor-Dunn, Adam Phillips, and Jon Russell, his goal is a testament to his determination to make a mark in England.
After enduring challenges with fitness following his late arrival, the former Arsenal youth product has steadily carved out a role under manager Darrell Clarke, featuring in nine of the last 13 League One games and starting three.
