Okocha Stands Firm on His Criticism of NFF, Refuses to Apologize for His Outburst

Legendary Nigerian footballer Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha has made a bold statement regarding his controversial remarks on the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the recent appointment of Eric Chelle as the head coach of the Super Eagles. Despite facing criticism from officials, including his former teammate Victor Ikpeba, Okocha remains unapologetic, arguing that politics in football is detrimental to the country’s success.

In a passionate outburst, Okocha expressed his disapproval of the NFF’s decision to appoint Chelle, claiming that the constant changing of coaches and interference from politicians in football administration has stunted Nigeria’s potential to win international trophies. Okocha, who has always been a vocal advocate for football reform, stated that Nigeria possesses some of the best players in the world but has failed to translate that talent into success due to poor leadership.

“Football should not be managed by politicians,” Okocha said. “They turn it into a political game, and that’s why we haven’t won anything in recent years. It’s not the players; it’s the lack of consistency and vision at the top.”

He added that changing coaches frequently disrupts the flow of the team, saying, “When you change a coach, you change a generation.” According to Okocha, the NFF should consult with key players before making such decisions, as the relationship between players and their coach significantly impacts performance.

The former Super Eagles star doubled down on his stance, emphasizing the need for a reformed NFF led by individuals with a genuine passion for the game. He also made it clear that he would not apologize for voicing his opinion. “I’ve received messages asking me to apologize, but I will not. We must speak out for the betterment of Nigerian football. If my words upset anyone, so be it,” Okocha declared.

Okocha’s criticism sparked a heated debate, with some NFF officials, including Ikpeba, defending the decision to hire Chelle. However, Okocha’s stance remains unchanged as he continues to advocate for a future where football in Nigeria is free from political interference.
