Onyinyechi Zogg Shines in Perth Glory Defeat, Wins Player of the Match Award

In the world of football, resilience often shines brightest in the face of adversity. For Super Falcons defender Onyinyechi Zogg, this season with Perth Glory in the A-League Women has been a testament to her unyielding spirit and undeniable talent.

On a stormy evening against Wellington Phoenix, Zogg stood tall despite the odds. The 27-year-old Swiss-born Nigerian international delivered a commanding defensive performance, earning her the prestigious Coates Player of the Match award. Even though Perth Glory fell 2-0, Zogg’s contributions were impossible to overlook.

The match itself was a challenging one for Glory, with goals from Grace Jale and Olivia Fergusson securing victory for Wellington Phoenix. But for much of the first half, Zogg was a brick wall, thwarting Phoenix attacks and giving her side hope amidst the relentless downpour.

Since joining Perth Glory in August 2024, following a stint with Swiss club Servette, Zogg has been a cornerstone of the team’s defense. Featuring in all eight league matches this season, she has consistently impressed with her positioning, interceptions, and leadership at the back. While she’s yet to find the back of the net, her value lies in the solidity she brings to the team.

Her journey to this point has been nothing short of remarkable. With a career that has spanned clubs in Switzerland, France, Germany, and Israel, including a Champions League campaign with FC Zurich in 2021, Zogg’s experience is evident in her gameplay.

On the international stage, Zogg made her debut for the Super Falcons in June 2021 during a friendly against Jamaica. However, she has not featured for the national team since. Her recent form in Australia, though, might just reignite conversations about her potential return to the Nigerian squad, especially with the Paris 2024 Olympics looming.

For Perth Glory, the road ahead remains daunting. The team is now on a three-game winless streak and sits tenth in the league standings with just eight points from nine matches. But with players like Zogg in their ranks, there’s hope for a turnaround.

As Zogg continues to excel, her story serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance and the impact of individual brilliance, even in difficult circumstances.
