In a night of high drama at Stade Pierre Rajon, fifth-tier Bourgoin-Jallieu delivered a stunning upset, knocking out Ligue 1 giants Lyon in a penalty shootout to advance in the Coupe de France.
The underdogs showed no fear, capitalizing on Lyon’s early defensive lapse when Mehdi Moujetzky pounced on a mistake to give Bourgoin an unexpected lead. Lyon responded before halftime, with Nemanja Matić finding the net to restore parity. However, the second half saw Bourgoin retake control, as Georges Mikautadze’s composed finish restored their advantage.
Lyon’s desperation to equalize led to costly mistakes. Moujetzky doubled his tally, punishing a wayward backpass from Warmed Omari to deepen Lyon’s woes. Yet, a late push saw Lyon force the match to penalties, with hopes resting on the experienced duo of Alexandre Lacazette and Corentin Tolisso.
Bourgoin’s goalkeeper, Ronan Jay, emerged the hero of the night, denying both veterans in the shootout. Though Moussa Niakhaté and Ernest Nuamah converted their spot-kicks, it wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit. With a 4-2 penalty victory, Bourgoin-Jallieu celebrated one of the most memorable moments in their history, sending Lyon out of the competition in shocking fashion.
