For the first time in two decades, Ghana will not feature in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a reality that has left former Black Stars forward Prince Tagoe heartbroken.
Tagoe, once a key figure for Ghana, could not hide his disappointment as he reflected on the team’s disastrous qualification campaign, which saw them finish last in Group F. The Black Stars failed to win a single game, managing only three draws and suffering three defeats.
Speaking on Sporty FM, the former Hearts of Oak striker shared his emotions over Ghana’s absence from the continental showpiece.
> “It is very sad because qualifying and playing at the AFCON is what every Ghanaian wants. Ghana has always been present at the tournament, so missing out is painful. Watching other countries compete while we sit out is heartbreaking,” he lamented.
Despite the disappointment, Tagoe urged the team to refocus and come back stronger.
> “We have to prepare ourselves mentally and physically to return stronger because we can do it,” he added.
While the AFCON tournament will go on without them, Ghana must now shift its attention to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Black Stars will return to action in March for crucial matches against Chad and Madagascar on Matchdays five and six.
Can Ghana rise from this setback and reclaim its place among Africa’s elite? Only time will tell.
