Wolverhampton Wanderers eye Lens star as defensive woes mount
Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers are locked in negotiations to sign Austrian defender Kevin Danso from French club Lens. The 26-year-old, of Ghanaian descent, has been identified as a key target to address Wolves’ alarming defensive struggles this season.
Danso has been a stalwart for Lens, amassing 125 appearances over the last four seasons. Notably, he had a brief stint in the Premier League during the 2019-20 season, where he made 10 appearances on loan at Southampton. Wolves hope his prior experience in English football, combined with his leadership qualities at the back, can help solidify their faltering defense.
Wolves’ push for a new centre-back intensified after losing Maximilian Kilman to West Ham United in the summer transfer window and suffering a major setback with Yerson Mosquera’s ACL injury in September. Despite the recent acquisition of Emmanuel Agbadou from Reims, head coach Vitor Pereira is eager to further strengthen his backline.
Defensive frailty has plagued Wolves this season, with the team conceding 52 goals in just 23 Premier League matches—making them one of the worst defensive outfits in the league. As a result, they find themselves in 18th place and battling relegation.
With a crucial home clash against Aston Villa looming on Saturday, Wolves are determined to secure Danso’s signature to stabilize their defense and improve their survival prospects.
