Josephine Afua Kyerewaa Bonsu has always carried a deep connection to Ghana through her father, but now, she’s ready to wear the Black Queens jersey and represent her roots on the international stage.
Born and raised in Germany, the 25-year-old winger’s journey to the Ghanaian national team began when former Black Queens coach Nora Hauptle scouted her during a Frauen-Bundesliga match in 2024. Playing for Carl Zeiss Jena in a hard-fought 1-1 draw against SC Freiburg, Kyerewaa’s talent stood out, earning her a spot on the radar of Ghanaian football.
Now, under head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren, Kyerewaa has joined the Black Queens on their training tour in Morocco. Her integration into the squad has been seamless, thanks to the warm welcome from her teammates.
“The Queens made it easy for me. They welcomed me like family,” she shared.
Eager to make her mark, she hopes to bring a unique flair to the team.
“Everyone brings different qualities, and I hope I can add my own style of play to help the team succeed,” she said.
The Black Queens are using their 10-day training camp to stay sharp ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). They are set to test their progress against Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses on February 21 at the Père Jégo Stadium, followed by a clash with club side AS FAR three days later.
For Afua Kyerewaa, this is more than just a call-up—it’s the beginning of a new chapter, one she hopes will lead to great things for both her and the Black Queens.
