Rumors that Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka and Lesley Ugochukwu have applied to switch their international allegiance from England and France to Nigeria have been quashed. Both players, currently featuring in the Premier League, are eligible to represent either their respective countries or Nigeria. Recent reports had suggested that they had submitted papers for a nationality switch and were even included in Nigeria’s 31-man provisional squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
However, BBC journalist Oluwashina Okeleji clarified the situation, revealing that only the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has the authority to apply for a player’s international switch, refuting claims that the duo had initiated the process. An NFF official emphasized that the circulating news was false, as no official application had been made.
Although conversations about the players potentially joining the Super Eagles have taken place, there is no official confirmation that they have started the process of changing their international allegiance. This comes as new Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, the former Mali head coach, prepares for the crucial World Cup qualifiers in March.
With Nigeria needing to secure wins against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, and a midfield that may require reinforcements, Chukwuemeka and Ugochukwu have been discussed as potential additions to the squad. Chukwuemeka, an attacking midfielder, and Ugochukwu, a defensive presence in the middle, could bolster Nigeria’s options, especially considering doubts over Wilfred Ndidi’s fitness ahead of the qualifiers.
However, until an official nationality switch takes place, Coach Chelle will likely focus on players already committed to representing Nigeria as the Super Eagles aim for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
