Ghana’s absence from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has sent shockwaves through the football community, marking the first time in two decades that the Black Stars have failed to qualify for the tournament. The disappointment has left fans questioning the team’s direction, but defender Tariq Lamptey remains hopeful about the road ahead.
Speaking in an interview with Telecom Asia Sport, the Brighton & Hove Albion right-back acknowledged the team’s struggles but urged his teammates to focus on the future.
“Of course, it’s not ideal for us. As a team, we always want to qualify for every major tournament and compete at the highest level. Missing out on AFCON is disappointing, but we have some big games coming up, so we have to look forward to that.”
Lamptey stressed the need for a positive mindset, emphasizing that Ghana must use this setback as fuel for upcoming challenges, particularly in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
“We go into every tournament looking to qualify and win it, but now we have to shift our focus to the games in March. We still have a lot to play for, and it’s crucial that we come together as a team, work hard, and ensure we are prepared for the challenges ahead.”
With the Black Stars now turning their attention to World Cup qualification and other international fixtures, the team has a chance to rebuild and restore their status as one of Africa’s football giants. While the disappointment of AFCON 2025 lingers, Ghana’s journey to redemption has already begun.
