Eric Chelle is eager to maintain his winning momentum as Nigeria’s head coach when the Super Eagles host Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Tuesday, March 24, in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 pm CAT (SA, GMT+2).
Chelle began his tenure on a high note with a 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali on March 21. Appointed on January 7 to succeed interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, the Malian tactician secured Nigeria’s first win in Group C, reviving hopes after a poor start to the qualifying campaign.
The Super Eagles had struggled initially, earning just one point from their first four matches. They drew against Lesotho (1-1), Zimbabwe (0-0), and South Africa (1-1) before a shock 2-1 loss to Benin left them in a precarious position. However, Chelle’s arrival has reignited their World Cup aspirations, with Nigeria climbing to fourth place on six points.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe remain winless and rooted to the bottom of the group with three points. Michael Nees’ side showed promise with draws against Rwanda (0-0) and Nigeria (1-1) but faltered against Lesotho, suffering a 2-0 defeat. A recent 2-2 draw with Benin on March 20 added to their woes, leaving them desperate for a breakthrough victory.
With the Super Eagles back on track, Chelle will be aiming to make it two wins in two and further strengthen Nigeria’s bid for a place at the 2026 World Cup.
