Six years after showcasing his talent for the Flying Eagles at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, Igoh Ogbu has finally earned his long-awaited call-up to the Nigerian senior national team. The Slavia Prague center-back, whose performances in the Czech league and European competitions have turned heads, is relishing the opportunity to represent his country on the biggest stage.
With the Super Eagles preparing for crucial 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, Ogbu is soaking in every moment under new head coach Eric Chelle. Speaking to reporters in Kigali, he praised the Malian tactician’s approach.
“He is a tough gaffer, he pushes us to be good players, and that’s what I love,” Ogbu said, reflecting on his early days in the squad.
Despite facing competition from established defenders like William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey, the former Lillestrøm man is confident in his abilities. Asked about his key attributes, he stated, “My three best qualities? I am strong, intelligent, and capable of playing good football.”
Nigeria’s qualification campaign has been anything but smooth, with the team struggling to deliver consistent results. However, Ogbu remains focused on contributing to a turnaround.
“It feels great. I am happy to be part of the national team. For me, it’s a great thing. Everybody wants to play for his country, and I am really happy to be here,” he said.
He understands the weight of the Super Eagles jersey and the expectations that come with it. “The moment they called me to the national team, I knew it’s not a place for a holiday. We are here to fight for Nigerians and play good football. When you get the opportunity, you have to do what is right for the country and for yourself.”
With Chelle favoring a two-man central defense, Ogbu may have to wait for his full debut unless a tactical shift to three at the back offers him an opening. Regardless of when he steps onto the pitch, one thing is certain—he is ready to seize his moment.
