As the Super Eagles prepare for a crucial World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, a former coach with inside knowledge has sent a warning—underestimate the Amavubi at your own peril.
Stephen Constantine, the current head coach of Pakistan and a former leader of the Rwandan national team, believes size and reputation won’t determine the outcome at Amahoro Stadium.
“It’s not about size or population but what you do with what you have, and Rwanda does that well,” Constantine told Deutsche Welle, as quoted by The New Times.
Despite sitting atop the group with seven points, Rwanda faces a daunting challenge against Nigeria, the 2013 AFCON champions desperate for a win. But Constantine, who has witnessed the steady rise of Rwandan football, insists that talent and discipline could tilt the scales.
“I think Rwanda is underestimated to a large degree, but there’s talent in Rwanda, lots of talent. That is what happens when you give players time and opportunity to develop,” he added.
For the Super Eagles, Friday’s 5:00 PM showdown in Kigali is a must-win to keep their World Cup dreams alive. But if Constantine’s words hold true, Nigeria could be in for a tougher battle than expected.
