TJ Tahid Makes Ghana U20 Debut, Inches Closer to Nationality Switch

Canadian-born football prodigy TJ Tahid has taken a bold step toward representing Ghana on the international stage after making his debut for the Black Satellites on Thursday, March 21, 2025.

The Vancouver FC starlet was handed a starting role in Ghana’s U20 side during a four-nation tournament clash against Morocco U20. Tahid played 70 minutes in the tightly contested match, which ended in a narrow 1-0 defeat for the Black Satellites.

His debut comes as he vies for a spot in Ghana’s squad for the upcoming TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), set to take place in Cote D’Ivoire from April 26 to May 18, 2025. Ghana has been drawn into Group A alongside hosts Tanzania, DR Congo, and a representative from the Central African Football Federations Union (UNIFAC).

Despite having represented Canada at the FIFA U17 World Cup in November 2023, Tahid remains eligible to play for either nation at the senior level. His appearance for Ghana U20 signals a growing commitment to the West African country while preserving his future options.

Expressing his excitement, Tahid shared his gratitude for the opportunity: “I’m incredibly grateful and honored to have the opportunity to represent my motherland and my family.”

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder, born in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, is seen as one of the brightest talents emerging from the Canadian Premier League. His performance in Ghana’s youth setup will likely play a crucial role in determining his international allegiance moving forward.
