Troost-Ekong Takes Blame as Super Eagles Face World Cup Qualification Battle

Nigeria’s Captain Vows to Lead Fightback After Zimbabwe Setback

In a dramatic night in Uyo, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong found himself at the center of controversy after his costly error allowed Zimbabwe to snatch a late equaliser in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw. The result has placed Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in serious jeopardy.

With the Super Eagles leading deep into stoppage time, a lapse in concentration from Troost-Ekong allowed Zimbabwe substitute Tawanda Chirewa to slip past him and slot the ball under goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. The goal stunned the home crowd and left Nigeria with just seven points from six games—fourth in Group C and trailing leaders South Africa by six points.

Despite the setback, the 31-year-old Al-Kholood defender was quick to accept responsibility for his mistake. In a post on Twitter, he wrote: “Responsibility taken. Same target ahead. We will do it together! Nigeria Super Eagles.”

Troost-Ekong, who was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, remains defiant, insisting the team can still secure a spot at the World Cup. “Although we have three teams ahead of us, we are still on track. That’s the most important thing,” he said.

The draw against Zimbabwe mirrors Nigeria’s frustrating campaign so far. While rivals South Africa strengthened their position at the top of Group C with a 2-0 win over Benin Republic, Nigeria’s inability to secure maximum points has raised concerns about their World Cup ambitions.

However, there is a glimmer of hope for the Super Eagles. South Africa could face a points deduction after allegations of fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho. Such a ruling could shift the group dynamics in Nigeria’s favor.

Amid the disappointment, key Super Eagles players remain optimistic. Fulham’s Alex Iwobi took to Snapchat to share his faith: “We’ll make the World Cup in the mighty name of Jesus.” Nottingham Forest’s Ola Aina echoed the sentiment, assuring fans: “We will make this WC.”

With four matches remaining, Nigeria must deliver flawless performances and hope for slip-ups from their rivals to keep their World Cup dreams alive. The road ahead is tough, but the Super Eagles are not ready to give up the fight.
