Maxwell Konadu Reflects on the Tactical Mystery of South African Football

Former Black Leopards boss Maxwell Konadu has shared an eye-opening comparison between his experiences in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) and South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL), highlighting a stark contrast in tactical predictability.

Speaking candidly, Konadu admitted that coaching in South Africa presented unique challenges, largely due to the tactical unpredictability of local teams.

“In South Africa, each team has its own identity, and you never know what to expect next,” he revealed. “But in Ghana, it’s easier to predict how a coach will set up his team before a game.”

For Konadu, this element of surprise in the PSL made preparing for matches more demanding. He pointed out that while South African football thrives on creativity and variability, Ghanaian football is rooted in mental strength and ambition.

“Ghanaian players are incredibly hungry,” he said. “They’re driven by the dream of playing in Europe, and that hunger gives them an edge mentally.”

Konadu’s reflections offer a compelling window into the contrasting football philosophies of two of Africa’s top leagues—one defined by tactical spontaneity, the other by relentless ambition.
