Former Super Eagles star and ex-Stoke City forward, Peter Osaze Odemwingie, has voiced deep concern over Nigeria’s dwindling 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes, calling the campaign “embarrassing” and “painful to watch.”
The 43-year-old, who notched 11 goals in 62 appearances for Nigeria, reflected on the team’s underwhelming run — just one win in six matches — a far cry from the dominance the Super Eagles are known for on the continent.
Nigeria’s 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali, masterminded by coach Finidi George Chelle, offered a glimmer of hope. But that was quickly dimmed after the team dropped crucial points to Zimbabwe, leaving their qualification hopes in jeopardy. The Super Eagles now sit six points behind group leaders South Africa and must win their final four games to stay in the race.
“I’ve been following Nigeria’s results closely,” Odemwingie said in an interview with Sportsblog247.com. “We’re struggling to secure victories, and we’re learning the hard way. It would be embarrassing to miss out on two consecutive World Cups.”
He added that fatigue and tactical lapses are costing the team vital points. “When players tire, it’s crucial to make timely changes, close the spaces, and protect the lead. That’s what big teams do. We can’t afford to underestimate opponents, even if they don’t have marquee players.”
With mounting pressure and limited games remaining, Nigeria’s journey to the 2026 World Cup is teetering on the edge. The road ahead is narrow, and Odemwingie’s warning serves as a stark reminder of what’s at stake.
