As the Black Queens gear up for their long-awaited return to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has sent a message of solidarity and encouragement to the team ahead of the tournament in Morocco.
Ghana will be making their 13th appearance at the continental showpiece after a seven-year absence, with their last participation dating back to 2018. The Queens find themselves in a competitive Group C, where they will face defending champions South Africa, Tanzania, and Mali.
Currently camped in Morocco, the team is putting finishing touches on their preparations ahead of their opening game against South Africa on July 7. The squad has shown promising form in their warm-up matches, having defeated Malawi 3-1 and Benin 4-2. They are scheduled to face arch-rivals Nigeria in their final preparatory fixture this Saturday.
Minister Kofi Adams, speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana, expressed the nation’s full support:
> “On behalf of the President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, and the good people of Ghana, I extend our heartfelt wishes to the Black Queens as they prepare for the Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco scheduled from July 5 to July 26.”
> “As the Minister for Sports and Recreation, I want to affirm that the entire nation is firmly with you and we trust in your ability to represent Ghana with distinction and excellence.”
The Black Queens will be aiming to make history by clinching their maiden WAFCON title in Morocco. With national support swelling and preparations peaking, hopes are high that 2024 could finally be the year Ghana ascends to the top of African women’s football.
