After years in the shadows, Ghana’s Black Queens are back in the spotlight—and midfielder Jennifer Cudjoe believes it’s only the beginning. Following their hard-fought bronze medal win at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the Queens have not just earned a place on the podium, but also reignited belief in the future of women’s football in Ghana.
Their third-place triumph came via a tense 4-3 penalty shootout victory over South Africa, marking a significant milestone for a team that didn’t even qualify for the last edition and couldn’t escape the group stages in 2018, despite being hosts.
“There is progress now,” Cudjoe shared. “We hope in the future there is going to be more investment into women’s football. For now, it is getting better than it used to be.”
The Queens are set to return to Ghana with their heads held high, expected to arrive at Kotoka International Airport at 5:00 AM today, greeted by fans proud of their resilience.
Meanwhile, tournament giants Nigeria clinched their record-extending 10th title, narrowly defeating hosts Morocco in a dramatic final.
