CHAN 2024 Warning: Tanzania Stun Senegal Again Ahead of Nigeria Showdown

Senegal’s preparations for their CHAN 2024 title defense took another hit as they fell 2-1 to co-hosts Tanzania in a spirited pre-tournament friendly at the Karatu Stadium. This second straight defeat—following a 2-1 loss to Uganda—raises serious concerns for the reigning champions just days before their Group C opener against Nigeria’s Super Eagles B team.

It all started brightly for Senegal when Mapathe Mbodji pounced on a goalkeeping error to nod home from a recycled set-piece in the 8th minute. The early goal gave the impression of control for the West Africans, but that grip slowly loosened under relentless Tanzanian pressure.

Tanzania, already riding high after a 1-0 win over Uganda, responded with fire and fluidity. Winger Iddi Suleiman was a constant menace, tearing through Senegal’s backline with pace and precision. Although they went into the break trailing, the momentum had clearly shifted.

Just nine minutes into the second half, Suleiman’s direct running earned a penalty after he was brought down by Mbaye Ndiaye. Abdul Suleiman converted coolly to bring the hosts level. The turnaround was completed just five minutes later when Feisal Salum’s clever free-kick found Abdul Suleiman, whose assist allowed Ibrahim Abdullah to delicately chip in Tanzania’s second.

Senegal nearly hit back, but Yakoub Suleiman—brought on in goal—produced a fine save to deny Libasse Gueye and preserve the 2-1 scoreline.

With CHAN 2024 kicking off shortly, Tanzania’s back-to-back victories over both co-hosts and defending champions send a strong message. As for Senegal, the back-to-back defeats leave them under pressure and far from convincing ahead of their high-stakes opener against Nigeria.
