“Hope Rekindled: Black Queens Set Sights on WAFCON Glory – Coach Kim Bjorkegren”

After years away from the continental spotlight, Ghana’s Black Queens have reignited national hope with a strong showing at the recently concluded Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco. Their bronze medal finish has not only stirred pride but also sparked belief in what lies ahead.

Returning to the tournament for the first time since 2018, the Queens defied expectations — battling through a tough group stage and advancing to the semifinals. Despite falling to hosts Morocco, the team secured third place after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over South Africa.

At the heart of this resurgence is head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren, who remains confident about the team’s future prospects. Speaking to the media upon the team’s return to Accra, the Swedish tactician shared his belief in the squad’s potential.

“We learned a lot, especially from our first game. A few tactical adjustments made a big difference,” Bjorkegren explained. “The future of Ghanaian women’s football is very bright. If we continue working hard, there’s no doubt — we can win the WAFCON.”

Ghana’s campaign saw them lose narrowly to South Africa, draw against Mali, and clinch a crucial win over Tanzania to progress from the group. A commanding performance against Algeria in the quarterfinals followed before their narrow semifinal defeat to Morocco.

Still, the Queens walked away with their heads held high — and a nation behind them. With renewed spirit and unity, the path to continental glory looks promising.
