Defending champions Senegal are set to kick off their 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign with a high-stakes opener against Nigeria on Tuesday at the Amani Stadium.
Head coach Souleymane Diallo, who led Senegal to their maiden CHAN title in Algeria two years ago, insists his squad feels no pressure heading into the tournament as holders. Instead, he views their position as a source of responsibility.
“Being defending champions doesn’t put pressure on us,” Diallo said. “We have a duty to live up to our status, and the team is ready to embrace that challenge.”
The Teranga Lions are drawn into a competitive Group D that includes continental powerhouses Nigeria, Congo, and Sudan. Despite their previous success, Diallo remains grounded and warned against underestimating any opponent.
“In African football today, there are no small teams. Every side deserves respect,” he stated.
Midfielder El Hadj Malick echoed his coach’s sentiments, highlighting the motivation derived from national pride. “We know the expectations back home in Senegal are high. That pushes us to fight harder and maintain our winning legacy,” he said.
As the title defence begins, Senegal will look to set the tone early with a commanding performance against Nigeria, a team equally eager to make their mark.
