Tragedy Strikes Nigerian Football: Shooting Stars’ Assistant Coach Akin Olowokere Passes Away on Pitch

The Nigerian football community has been plunged into deep mourning following the sudden death of Shooting Stars SC’s assistant coach, Akin Olowokere.

The tragedy unfolded on Monday morning, August 11, at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, where Olowokere collapsed during preparations for Matchday 2 of the ValueJet Cup 2025. Despite the swift response of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The official cause of death remains unknown.

Olowokere, who was only recently appointed as Shooting Stars’ assistant coach on a contract running until 2027, was revered for his passion, dedication, and fatherly mentorship to players. In an emotional statement, the club confirmed his passing, describing him as not only a tactician but also a guide and inspiration to many in the game.

A former Sunshine Stars player, Olowokere had previously worked alongside manager Edith Agoye and also had coaching stints with Ekiti United. His sudden passing has left fans, colleagues, and the entire Nigerian football family heartbroken, with tributes pouring in across social media.
