Nigeria’s hopes of sneaking back into the 2026 World Cup race through a boardroom decision have officially been dashed.
On Monday night, FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee announced that South Africa will face no punishment over allegations of fielding an ineligible player during their March qualifier against Lesotho. Midfielder Teboho Mokoena was accused of playing despite a yellow-card suspension, a claim that had Nigeria and Benin Republic quietly watching for a potential lifeline.
A guilty verdict could have rocked Group C—handing South Africa a 3-0 forfeiture, docking three points, and reshuffling the standings. Instead, the committee’s ruling keeps Bafana Bafana firmly on top with 17 points from eight matches, four clear of Benin (14) and six ahead of Nigeria (11), with only two games left.
For the Super Eagles, it’s a gut punch. The three-time African champions, fresh from a 1-1 draw in Bloemfontein last week, must now win out and pray for a miracle elsewhere to reach the playoffs.
FIFA emphasized that its exhaustive review found no breach of the eligibility rules, closing the case and strengthening South Africa’s march toward North America 2026.
What once seemed like a faint administrative escape route for Nigeria has vanished. The road to the World Cup now demands nothing short of perfection on the pitch.
