Former Super Eagles striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has shared a hilarious story from his Premier League days under veteran English manager Harry Redknapp, revealing how he narrowly missed out on a $20,000 reward from his boss.
According to the ex-Portsmouth and Everton forward, Redknapp had promised him $20,000 if he could reach 20 goals by the end of the season. With Yakubu sitting on 15 goals going into the final matchday, the Nigerian striker produced a remarkable performance — scoring four times to bring his tally to 19 goals, just one shy of the target.
After the match, Yakubu recalled feeling slightly disappointed despite his heroics. Redknapp, noticing his mood, asked what was wrong. When Yakubu reminded him of the bet, the English coach burst out laughing and jokingly said:
> “I forgot about that — I should have subbed you off earlier!”
Though he missed out on the cash prize, the moment remains one of Yakubu’s fondest — and funniest — memories from his time in English football, showcasing both his goalscoring instinct and his manager’s cheeky sense of humor.
