Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye has lavished praise on veteran captain Idrissa Gana Gueye, highlighting the leadership, calmness, and experience he brings to the squad ahead of their AFCON 2025 quarterfinal clash against Mali.
Speaking during a pre-match press briefing, Gueye emphasized the influence of the 36-year-old midfielder, noting that age has done little to diminish his impact on the team.
“He brings us a lot of serenity thanks to his experience. At 36 years old, you’d think he was 20,” Gueye said. “We are, of course, still listening to a player like that.”
Turning his attention to Mali, Gueye acknowledged the physical threat posed by their West African rivals but made it clear that Senegal have no intention of abandoning their identity on the pitch.
“Mali is very physical, but we won’t change our football,” he explained, underlining the champions’ confidence in their playing style.
Gueye also pointed to the midfield as the decisive battleground in the contest, stressing where Senegal believe the game will be won or lost.
“This match will be decided in the midfield,” he added, as the reigning champions look to take another step toward defending their continental crown.
