Nathaniel Adjei’s Long Road Back: Ghana Defender Savours Dream Return with Six Straight Games for Lorient

Ghana defender Nathaniel Adjei is finally smiling again—and for good reason. After a year-long injury nightmare, the Lorient centre-back is back on the pitch and thriving, marking a major personal milestone with six consecutive appearances for the French Ligue 1 side.

The Stade du Moustoir dressing room was alive with music, laughter, and champagne following Lorient’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over FC Nantes. In the middle of the celebrations stood Adjei, laughing almost in disbelief as teammates danced around him.

“Six games in a row,” he whispered to himself, still trying to process the moment. For months, simply returning this season had felt uncertain.

Adjei had been sidelined for an entire year, enduring long rehabilitation days and lonely matchdays spent watching from the stands. But his patience and resilience are now paying off. Against Nantes, he made a composed 17-minute appearance—his sixth straight outing since his return—showing sharpness and confidence.

“It feels amazing,” Adjei told Sportsblog247.com. “When you’re injured, you miss everything—the noise, the tackles, even the pressure. Being back and contributing again is the best feeling in football.”

The Teshie-born defender was quick to acknowledge the support system that helped him through the darkest period of his career.

“I’m grateful to the medical staff and the coach for trusting me. They didn’t rush my recovery, and now my body feels strong.”

Adjei’s setback came on the most bittersweet of occasions—his senior debut for the Black Stars. He was forced off during an AFCON qualifier against Niger on November 18, 2024, before undergoing surgery a month later.

Since then, it has been a long and demanding road back, filled with intensive rehab and mental battles. Yet, the 23-year-old has emerged stronger and more determined.

“This is just the beginning,” he said with a grin. “I’m hungry, I’m fit, and I’m enjoying my football again. I want to finish the season even stronger.”

Adjei initially joined Lorient on loan from Swedish club Hammarby in January 2024, making 15 Ligue 1 appearances before the French side made the move permanent in the summer for a reported $7 million.
