3,000 Athletes Gear Up for 2024 Anti-Corruption Half Marathon in Abuja

Approximately 3,000 athletes have registered to participate in the 2024 Anti-Corruption Half Marathon, set to take place in Abuja on December 7.

This fifth edition of the race aims to raise awareness about the pervasive issue of corruption and promote collective action against it. Jacob Onu, the National Coordinator of the marathon, highlighted the event’s significance at a press conference in Abuja, emphasizing that the fight against corruption is ongoing and requires persistence and endurance.

“The fight against corruption is not a one-off battle but rather a continuous one that requires perseverance and endurance. This is the reason behind this initiative. The marathon is symbolic; without perseverance and endurance, one can’t start and finish a marathon,” he stated.

In terms of rewards, the winners of both male and female categories will each receive N1 million, while the first and second runners-up will earn N700,000 and N500,000, respectively.

Maj.-Gen. Abdullahi Maikano, President of the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OSMA), expressed that OSMA will fully support the marathon, recognizing its importance. “In my capacity as the President of OSMA, I will ensure that the African military participates in the marathon race. We will use the upcoming African Military Games in Abuja to raise awareness for the race and invite our colleagues from Niger, Ghana, Mali, and other African countries to participate,” Maikano noted.

Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), also urged stakeholders to align with the marathon’s goals. Represented by Abdul Ibrahim, President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, Gumel stated that events like this are crucial for discovering new talents for the country.

The 21.25 km half marathon will kick off at Eagles Square at 7 a.m., passing through the National Stadium and concluding at the Unity Fountain. The event is expected to be inaugurated by top government officials, members of the National Assembly Anti-Corruption Committee, business leaders, and other distinguished Nigerians.
