Glenrose Xaba Clinches SPAR Grand Prix Title in Johannesburg

Glenrose Xaba triumphed in the SPAR Grand Prix on Sunday at the Johannesburg SPAR 10km Women’s Challenge, finishing with a time of 32:48. This win marks her fourth victory in the SPAR Women’s Challenge series this year. Close behind were three-time SPAR Grand Prix champion Tadu Nare, who secured second place at 34:00, and Ethiopian runner Diniya Abaraya, who finished third in 34:14. The three athletes ran together for the first six kilometers before Xaba surged ahead to complete the race solo, making her the first South African to win the SPAR Grand Prix since the inclusion of international runners in 2019.

Xaba expressed her joy at winning the title again, reflecting on the sacrifices she made, including prioritizing this victory over her Olympic qualification goals. With support from her coaches, Caster Semenya and Violet Semenya, Xaba focused on long-term objectives, managing to overcome the challenging course with its steep hills.

Tadu Nare praised Xaba’s strength and progress, acknowledging her own satisfaction with her year’s performance despite finishing behind the South African runner. Abaraya, a former junior champion in the SPAR Grand Prix, described the year as both difficult and rewarding, grateful for the support of her fellow competitors.

Gerda Steyn, who finished sixth, commented on the positive impact international runners have had on the competition, pushing South African athletes to new heights. Xaba’s coach, Caster Semenya, applauded her dedication and looked forward to future successes, including Xaba’s upcoming participation in the Cape Town Marathon on October 19, where many hope she could set a national record.
