The Spintex Knights Sporting Club, Ghana’s first-ever team to reach the Elite 16 of the Basketball Africa League (BAL), is making an urgent appeal for support from the government and corporate sponsors. As the team prepares for the next stage of the prestigious continental competition, set to take place in Côte d’Ivoire from November 5 to 10, 2024, they face mounting financial challenges despite their historic accomplishment.

The Knights, who finished second in Group F during the qualifying rounds in Libya, are Greater Accra Basketball League champions. Co-founder Dr. Eric Opoku voiced his disappointment over the lack of backing from Ghana’s Ministry of Youth and Sports at a press conference in Accra, calling for immediate assistance.

“We have not received any support from the Ministry, which is disheartening, given the significance of our achievement. This young, talented team is representing Ghana on the international stage and deserves the nation’s backing,” Dr. Opoku remarked.

He called on both the government and corporate organizations to provide the financial and logistical support necessary for the Knights’ continued success. Head coach Serlorm Thomas expressed the team’s determination to secure a spot in the main BAL tournament, stating that their Elite 16 qualification marked a significant milestone in their journey.

Captain Elvis Pobi Siaw, known as ‘Arrow,’ exuded confidence in the team’s potential, stating, “This qualification is a chance for redemption, and we’re ready to give it our all in the next stage.” Top scorer James Amotoe echoed this sentiment, emphasizing his focus on helping the team achieve success in the upcoming matches.

Though the Spintex Knights have garnered support from individual contributors, including Dr. Opoku’s family and NASCO, they require more extensive backing to thrive at this critical stage. The team’s achievements have ignited excitement among Ghanaian basketball fans, and with the proper resources, they are on the cusp of securing their place among Africa’s elite basketball teams.

As the November 5 deadline approaches, the Knights are launching a fundraising campaign, calling on Ghana to rally behind them in their quest for continental success. The BAL, Africa’s premier basketball competition launched in partnership with the NBA, represents a tremendous opportunity for the Knights to make history and elevate Ghanaian basketball to new heights.
