Victor Osimhen’s Stunning Overhead Kick Nears Ronaldo’s Record

Victor Osimhen captured global attention with his spectacular overhead kick in the final minutes of Galatasaray’s 3-0 victory over Antalyaspor at the Corendon Airlines Park Antalya Stadı on October 19. Coming off the bench to replace Mauro Icardi in the 78th minute, the Nigerian international capped off the scoring with a memorable goal.

Osimhen overpowered his defender before executing a powerful overhead kick after Hakim Ziyech floated a free-kick into the box. Reports from Turkey, including NTV, noted that Osimhen’s goal was historic, as it marked one of only two overhead kick goals in football history to exceed the 2.30-meter height threshold.

The all-time record is held by Real Madrid legend Ronaldo, who scored an overhead kick measuring 2.38 meters during a Champions League quarterfinal against Juventus in April 2018. Osimhen’s kick reached an impressive height of 2.32 meters, just 0.06 meters shy of Ronaldo’s feat.

This performance marked Osimhen’s return after missing Galatasaray’s last two matches due to a muscle strain sustained against Kasimpasa on September 28, which also caused him to miss the Super Eagles’ squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Libya.

Reflecting on his goal, the reigning African Footballer of the Year mentioned that he allowed the ball to bounce, making it easier to strike since the defender was closing in on him. Since joining Galatasaray, Osimhen has made an impressive impact, contributing six goal involvements in five matches.
