In a weekend of surprising NPFL results, Ikorodu City ended Rivers United’s unbeaten run, defeating the former champions 2-0 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. After a tense, goalless first half, Cole Ayomide scored in the 48th minute, and Rivio Ayemwenre doubled the lead just five minutes later. Although Ikorodu had a third goal disallowed in the 78th minute, the victory marked a major upset and gave Remo Stars, who won 1-0 over Lobi Stars, a share of the top spot with Rivers United at 21 points.
Ikorodu City’s triumph, however, didn’t lift them out of the relegation zone as they remain just above Bayelsa United, Akwa United, and Lobi Stars.
Meanwhile, Heartland FC continued their impressive recovery with a 2-0 win over Abia Warriors in Aba, moving them to 12th place. Michael Ogu scored early in the 12th minute, with Chukwuma Agor sealing the result in injury time.
Elsewhere, Bendel Insurance came back from a loss last week to beat Sunshine Stars 2-1 in Ijebu Ode. Rangers International also found their footing with a 2-0 home victory against Nasarawa United, with both goals from Godwin Obaje.
Akwa United earned a crucial 2-1 victory over Kwara United but remain in the relegation zone, while Bayelsa United and Enyimba played to a 1-1 draw in Yenagoa. Kano Pillars staged a thrilling comeback to edge Plateau United 2-1, with goals from veterans Rabiu Ali and Ahmed Musa.
Finally, Niger Tornadoes secured a 2-0 win over Shooting Stars in Minna.
