John Obi Mikel Backs Chelsea Move for Prolific Sporting Striker Viktor Gyökeres

Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has recommended Chelsea consider signing Sporting Lisbon’s in-form striker, Viktor Gyökeres, amid growing speculation about the Swedish forward’s future. Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel expressed his admiration for Gyökeres’ suitability for the Premier League, highlighting his strength, pace, and impressive goal-scoring abilities.

Mikel drew comparisons to his own days at Stamford Bridge, when Chelsea’s top forwards—Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, and Nicolas Anelka—benefited from healthy competition. With Chelsea still on the hunt for a striker after unsuccessful bids for Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Mikel believes Gyökeres could provide vital competition for Nicolas Jackson in Chelsea’s attack.

Gyökeres, who has impressed since joining Sporting CP, has also attracted attention from Manchester United, as well as Premier League giants Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City. With Sporting’s manager Ruben Amorim reportedly set to move to Old Trafford, there’s talk that the prolific 26-year-old might follow his coach. Despite Premier League clubs passing on him last summer, Gyökeres has quickly made his mark in Portugal, boasting a remarkable goal record of 66 goals in 67 appearances, alongside 19 assists.

Sporting CP is expected to demand a hefty fee for Gyökeres, who has a €100 million release clause in his contract. Mikel, however, believes Chelsea should consider the investment, noting that his goal-scoring impact against clubs like Manchester City has shown him to be a potent and versatile forward who could thrive in England.
