In an unexpected decision, Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has shared some insight into why star midfielder Thomas Partey won’t be joining the Ghanaian national team for their upcoming matches. Addo revealed that while Partey was eager to participate, a confidential conversation between the two ultimately led to his exclusion, stemming from Addo’s protective stance toward his player.
“I had a confidential talk with Thomas. I am the coach who always wants to protect the players,” Addo told reporters, stressing that while he values transparency, some issues are best kept private. “The whole point for me was getting the understanding. I made it quite clear to him; he wanted to come, but I made it quite clear why he’s not coming.”
The coach suggested that the decision was based on mutual respect and understanding. “It’s confidential, so it’s difficult for me to mention all the things,” Addo explained, hinting that the matter is resolved and urging fans to focus on the matches ahead.
Partey’s absence has also led to a reshuffling in the team’s leadership. Initially, Addo had intended for Partey to captain the squad, hoping he’d lead the younger players by example. “The initiative was to make Thomas the captain of the team and for him to guide the team, to lead the team,” Addo said. However, in Partey’s stead, Jordan Ayew has been appointed captain, while Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Kudus have been positioned to take on more prominent roles.
“For Kudus, he’s still young; he needs to grow into that role,” Addo added, emphasizing his belief in the potential of the team’s rising talents. “The last time, [Ayew] was the captain because we expected Thomas to come.”
As Black Stars gear up for their matches, fans will look to Ayew, Kudus, and Djiku to step up in Partey’s absence, with the team rallying under Addo’s guidance and leadership.
