Ghanaian midfielder David Abagna played a pivotal role as APOEL Nicosia triumphed 2-1 over Fiorentina in a thrilling UEFA Europa League group stage match on Thursday. The game, held at the Neo GSP Stadium, saw APOEL seize control early in the first half.
Anastasios Donis opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a low strike past Fiorentina’s goalkeeper, following a precise through ball from Youssef El-Arabi. Just before the halftime whistle, Abagna doubled APOEL’s advantage, finishing a rapid counterattack with a calm shot into the bottom left corner.
Despite Fiorentina’s 64% possession and increased pressure in the second half, they only managed to pull one goal back in the 74th minute. Jonathan Ikoné capitalized on an assist from Christian Kouamé, but APOEL held firm to secure all three points.
The victory is crucial for APOEL as they push for qualification in the competition. They will now shift their focus to their next Cypriot league match against AEL Limassol.
