Otto Addo: Black Stars Must Secure First AFCON Qualifiers Win Against Angola

Ghana’s AFCON Hopes Hang by a Thread as Team Prepares for Pivotal Clash

The pressure is mounting on the Black Stars as they gear up for a must-win encounter against Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Head coach Otto Addo has rallied his team, emphasizing that victory is non-negotiable to keep their slim qualification hopes alive.

Ghana, a four-time African champion, is on the brink of missing AFCON for the first time in two decades. Their qualifying campaign has been a nightmare so far, with a 1-0 loss to Madagascar in Kumasi and a 1-1 stalemate against Niger in their opening fixtures. A doubleheader against Sudan added to their woes, as Ghana managed a frustrating goalless draw at home before a humbling 2-0 defeat away.

Currently sitting at the bottom of Group F with just two points, the Black Stars’ fate hangs in the balance. Niger’s resounding 4-0 win over Sudan on Thursday has handed Ghana a lifeline, but the task ahead is daunting. To qualify, Ghana must defeat Angola and Niger in their remaining games and hope that Sudan loses to Angola.

Speaking to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) website, Addo expressed confidence in his squad’s mental readiness ahead of the Angola showdown. “Mentally, the boys are ready. I’m looking forward to that game. It’s time for our first victory in this competition,” said the former Borussia Dortmund talent coach.

The Black Stars will take on the Palancas Negras tonight at 19:00 GMT, with the weight of a nation’s hopes resting on their shoulders.
