Super Eagles’ Unbeaten Run Continues with Hard-Fought Draw Against Benin Republic

Super Eagles’ interim coach Augustine Eguavoen remains undefeated since taking charge, securing Nigeria’s qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Despite a tough match in Benin, a late equalizer from star forward Victor Osimhen sealed the points for Nigeria, ensuring their spot at the continental tournament.

The match, played at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, got off to a challenging start for Nigeria, with the Benin Republic taking a first-half lead through Mohamed Tijani’s goal. The rainy weather made conditions difficult, and the Super Eagles struggled to adapt to the downpour early in the game. However, Eguavoen’s side fought back in the second half, with Osimhen’s goal in the 81st minute securing a valuable point.

Reflecting on the encounter, Eguavoen acknowledged the difficulties caused by the rain but praised his team for their resilience. “It was a tough game, and I congratulate the players for a spirited display in the second half that earned us the equalizer,” he commented. The coach emphasized that despite the challenges, Nigeria’s AFCON ticket was now secure, with one game left in the qualifiers against Rwanda.

With 11 points from their group, Nigeria has already sealed their qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, ensuring they have a chance to finish the qualification series on a positive note with a home fixture against Rwanda in Uyo.
