Torunarigha Sees Red as Anderlecht Crush Gent in Belgian Derby

The Lotto Park in Brussels witnessed a dramatic showdown on Sunday as Anderlecht delivered a stunning 6-0 demolition of their fierce rivals, KAA Gent, in a Matchday 15 encounter of the Belgian First Division A.

Gent endured a nightmare evening, marked by defensive errors, two red cards, and an own goal, culminating in their heaviest defeat in over a decade.

The match began on a bright note for the home side, with Mats Rits opening the scoring early, followed by a well-taken goal from Samuel Edozie, the 21-year-old Anglo-Nigerian forward on loan from Southampton. Edozie, showing his growing potential, capitalized on a Kasper Dolberg assist to double Anderlecht’s lead.

The turning point came in the 43rd minute when Nigerian international Jordan Torunarigha, a key defender for Gent, received his second yellow card for a rash challenge, reducing his team to ten men. This marked Torunarigha’s first red card since joining Gent from Germany in January 2022. Despite maintaining a solid disciplinary record during his time in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin, Sunday’s incident highlighted a rare lapse in judgment.

Gent’s troubles worsened in the second half when Matisse Samoise was also sent off in the 75th minute. With Gent down to nine men, Anderlecht capitalized on their advantage. Kasper Dolberg netted twice, Francis Amuzu added a late goal, and a Tiago Araújo own goal compounded Gent’s misery.

The victory catapulted Anderlecht to fourth on the league table with 22 points, leaving Gent, who now sit sixth, four points adrift. For Torunarigha, it was an evening to forget, but for Samuel Edozie, the promising forward now boasts two goals and one assist in 10 league appearances, it was a performance to savor.
