A Story of Friendship, Sacrifice, and Success
Stephen Appiah, a former Ghana captain and football legend, recently shared a heartfelt story that highlighted the immense impact his former teammate, Gargo Mohammed, had on his career. Speaking at the 9th EMY Africa Awards after receiving the Continental Sports Icon Award, Appiah recounted how an extraordinary act of sacrifice from Gargo set him on the path to stardom.
In the late 1990s, a young and ambitious Stephen Appiah was part of Udinese’s junior team, dreaming of a breakthrough into the senior squad. However, he had yet to sign a professional contract, and opportunities to prove himself were scarce. That chance came in an unexpected and emotional twist, thanks to his compatriot, Gargo Mohammed.
During a friendly match between Udinese’s senior team and Austrian side Sturm Graz, Gargo devised a plan. In the 80th minute, he deliberately feigned an injury, forcing the coach to substitute him and call up Appiah to fill the spot. Appiah described the moment vividly:
“I came in with only 10 minutes left, and I knew this was my chance. I scored a goal from 25 yards out. The next day, I saw my name in the newspapers for the first time. I was shocked. I called Gargo, and he told me to visit him at home. When I arrived, he smiled and said, ‘The coach said we have to lock you in and not let you escape.’ Two days later, I signed my first professional contract.”
That goal and the subsequent contract marked the beginning of Appiah’s illustrious football career. From Udinese, he went on to play for renowned clubs like Juventus, Fenerbahçe, and Parma, becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers.
Appiah’s tribute to Gargo during his acceptance speech was emotional and heartfelt. “Every time I see you, I bow. I bow because I appreciate what you did for me. That selfless act changed my life.”
Gargo Mohammed, who also enjoyed a successful career with clubs like Stoke City, Venezia, and Genoa, remains a cherished figure in Ghanaian football history. His decision to uplift a young teammate exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
This moving story is a testament to the power of sacrifice and mentorship in shaping destinies.
