Mohammed Salisu Vows Comeback After Monaco’s UCL Heartbreak Against Benfica

Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu has pledged a swift response after AS Monaco’s 3-2 defeat to Benfica in a thrilling UEFA Champions League encounter on Wednesday night.

Monaco seemed poised for a crucial victory at the Stade Louis II, opening the scoring in the 13th minute through Eliesse Ben Seghir, assisted by Aleksandr Golovin. The first half ended with Monaco holding a slim 1-0 lead, but the intensity only ramped up in the second half.

Benfica equalized early in the second period, courtesy of Vangelis Pavlidis, before Maghnes Akliouche restored Monaco’s lead with a composed finish. However, the match took a dramatic turn when defender Wilfried Singo received a second yellow card, reducing Monaco to ten men.

In a bid to solidify his team’s defense, head coach Adi Hütter introduced Mohammed Salisu in the 63rd minute. Salisu’s introduction briefly steadied Monaco’s backline, but Benfica’s relentless attack proved too much. Arthur Cabral equalized in the 84th minute, capitalizing on a sublime assist from Ángel Di María. Moments later, Zeki Amdouni completed the comeback with a well-taken goal, leaving Monaco stunned.

Reflecting on the setback, Salisu took to Instagram, writing: “Tough one last night. We will learn from it and get back right next game.”

The loss complicates Monaco’s chances of progressing to the knockout stage, but they will look to regroup quickly. Salisu and his teammates face a crucial Ligue 1 fixture against Olympique Marseille this weekend, aiming to reignite their campaign both domestically and in Europe.
